From One Store to Six: Our Journey at TOAST
Back in 2019, on the cusp of a global pandemic that changed everything, we set out to create something extraordinary. Fuelled by a shared love for quality coffee and a vision for something better, we founded TOAST: an independent British coffee chain with a simple yet powerful mission: to bring communities together, champion sustainability, and serve exceptional coffee.
What began as a small idea during uncertain times has blossomed into a thriving family of six branches across Essex and Suffolk. This is our story, brewed one cup at a time.
A Dream Born in Uncertain Times
The idea for TOAST was sparked in 2019 when three friends- probably over-caffeinated and buzzing with ideas- realised something was missing from the high street. Too many coffee shops were owned by American, German, and Italian companies, with little to no connection to the communities they served.
That realisation led to a conversation:
“What if we created something different? A coffee shop that wasn’t just about great coffee and delicious food but also focused on transparency, sustainability, and giving back? A place that made people feel good about their choices while supporting the British economy?”
That evening, TOAST was born. Our vision was clear: to create a collection of independent, British-owned coffee houses across Essex and Suffolk that sourced high-quality ingredients from local suppliers and stood apart from the cookie-cutter approach of the big chains.
From Concept to Reality
In 2020, right in the middle of a global pandemic, we opened our first TOAST store in Braintree. Launching a business during lockdowns was no easy feat, but our sense of purpose kept us going.
We weren’t just selling coffee but crafting a better way forward. From the start, sustainability, responsible sourcing, and heartfelt customer experiences were at the heart of everything we did.
Every detail mattered — from creating a warm, inviting space to partnering with local suppliers who shared our values. The response from the Braintree community was overwhelming. Customers appreciated our coffee and our commitment to supporting local businesses and protecting the planet. Their support gave us the confidence to dream bigger.
Growing, Cup by Cup
The success of our Braintree store confirmed that we were onto something special, so we looked for our next location. People weren’t just looking for their daily caffeine fix; they wanted connection, sustainability, and heart.
Over the next few years, TOAST expanded to Chelmsford, Colchester, Sudbury, Witham, and Witham Railway Station. Each new location brought unique opportunities to connect with our communities and to give something back.
At Witham Railway Station, we created a calm space where busy commuters could pause and recharge. In Sudbury, TOAST has become a cherished community hub. Though each branch serves the same delicious menu, each has its own character and vibe—just like siblings in a family.
What Sets TOAST Apart
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From using 100% recyclable paper cups to repurposing coffee grounds as fertiliser, we operate with a “green heart.” By partnering with local suppliers, we reduce food miles, support small British businesses, and strengthen our connection to the communities we serve.
Giving back is equally important. Through our Coffee for a Coffee initiative, we’ve donated nearly 200,000 cups of coffee to people in need. For every coffee sold at one of our branches, we donate a coffee to a local charity or organisation supporting people facing challenges.
This is our way of saying thank you to the charities and organisations working tirelessly to uplift others — through the best medium: coffee.
Every cup served is a step toward improving the world, and we’re proud to play our part.
Looking Ahead
Our journey so far proves what’s possible when passion and purpose guide every decision. It’s about building community, celebrating quality, and creating moments of joy.
At TOAST, we believe every cup brewed brings us closer to a brighter tomorrow. We’re excited to take this journey with you as we continue to grow. Who knows? The next TOAST branch might be in your town or city.
